poem – Simple Questions

The dog and I made tracks

in the fresh snow

in the park tonight.

Where were you?

I looked at the trees

they seemed pointless

without leaves

So I stretched my head and eyes

and put leaves back on them

felt the summer hot air

on my neck and my legs

and then the dog came back

jumped up on me

she had a red ball in her mouth

and snow on her nose

Where are you?

The wind blew cold and colder

the trees snapped back to black veins

the softball diamond screening looked

like a giant fish net turned

upside down and quick frozen

I didn’t feel like quite that big a fish

so we walked on.

photos Antietam Battlefield, US CIVIL WAR

Antietam Battlefield from my trip in 2002 some of my shots from that day were made with a Voigtlander Cosina T101 rangefinder film camera and the CV Classic f2.5 35mm ltm lens.

The Battle of Antietam /ænˈttəm/ also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South, fought on Wednesday, September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek, as part of the Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil. It is the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with 22,717 dead, wounded, and missing on both sides combined.

The bridge is known as Burnside’s Bridge for the Union General who kept sending Union troops to cross it and where many were killed by Confederate sharpshooters who were positioned on the high ground on the west side of the creek.

I stood up there and could judge how effective was the firing angle of their hilltop position.

Grace and AC no. 2.
Grace and AC no. 2.

Our air cooling is not working out.  86 F in the main room this evening. My bedroom a few degrees cooler.

We replaced some very old windows this late Spring and about two years back, a new roof with lighter coloured tiles and some whirlybirds and a ridge vent to help cool us.  In the past month we have bought a couple of new fans and two new portable ac units.  I am not cool enough but my real worry is the dog and the cats..  Tonight I took the dog for a spin in the Toyota with the ac running hard which helped cool her off.  We checked Cesar’s dog cooling advice and we are trying one or two ideas we had not thought of before.  It is much hotter than last summer. l am not sure what we will do next.  A lot of summer to go.   Tomorrow I may go hide in the Midland Public Library, it is a non -dialysis day.  Today I finished mid afternoon, a scheduling oddity, and the nurses said it would be perfectly fine if I deided to linger and take advantage of their airconditioning.  But I pressed on and went for an iced coffee at McCafe in Midland, a nice cool restaurant.
